Join a dedicated corps of volunteers who are helping ANS fulfill its mission to preserve our region's natural resources and increase public understanding of natural history. Founded and run by volunteers for many years, ANS continues to rely on volunteers in many ways:

Sanctuary

Volunteer teams are working at Woodend to maintain the bird feeding station; to conduct beginner bird walks; to study and implement deer management strategies; to maintain demonstration gardens for native plants, runoff control, and organic produce; to remove invasive species; and to keep trails safe and accessible.

Education

Master Naturalist program alumni and other volunteers help ANS to conduct one free family program per month, as well as programs for adults, local schools, and the Audubon PreSchool.

Communication

Someone with graphic skills is urgently needed to redesign Woodend's five information kiosks and update them quarterly. Volunteers also help publicize ANS programs by participating in and staffing ANS information tables at community events. They work with ANS staff to maintain this website, produce the Naturalist Quarterly, and prepare mailings.

Conservation

The ANS Water Quality Monitoring program depends on teams of trained volunteers to collect and identify organisms from local streams on a regular basis to help gauge the health of our waterways. Volunteers also participate in ongoing conservation campaigns, such as the effort to protect Ten Mile Creek.

Benefits include opportunities to participate in hikes, lectures, and social events organized exclusively for volunteers. Volunteer opportunities are available through the ANS headquarters at Woodend in Chevy Chase, MD. Minimum age of 14 required; training is provided as needed.
